Re-Envision The Future From Grey To Green

Re-envision The Future From Grey To Green

Search "futuristic" on Google, and you'll find the images section saturated with photos of metallic robots, high-tech products emanating blue LED colors, and concrete jungles booming with sleek, sharp-edged, and stream-lined skyscrapers in all shades of silver and grey.

There's something slightly troubling and eerie about our current concept of "futuristic," though.

Where is all the greenery?

Even more baffling to me is that "futuristic" is actually defined as "having or involving very modern technology or design."

Doesn't this imply that the notion of our future revolving all around technology has become fact? Many of us already spend more time in our daily lives interacting with and focusing on the artificial than the natural, whether it be machines, computers, tablets, or smart phones.

Don't get me wrong--I have nothing against technology and actually think we need it to continually create breakthrough solutions to currently thought-to-be impossible problems and to keep use safe from natural dangers and disasters.

But has it taken us maybe a little too far away from the natural world? Have we lost touch with our planet so much so that we've forgotten what we fundamentally need to survive?

To be honest, just like I'm not quite sure where this endless trek of "development" is taking us, I'm not quite sure where this post is headed, either.

All I can be sure of is that I need clean air to breathe; unpolluted water to drink; sunlight to soak in; diverse sources of uncontaminated food to eat; loving and nurturing relationships to grow with; and a biodiverse earth community to live symbiotically and interdependently with.

Clean air, clean water, sunlight, nutritious food, loving people, and biodiversity:

I promise I will do everything in my power to keep you safe.

Because without you, I'll be nothing.

But with you, I'll have everything I need in order to become everything I want.

So let me re-envision the future.

I see vertical greens thriving alongside all the skyscrapers in our urban jungles; I see rooftop gardens blanketing all of our homes and buildings; I see machines and vehicles all powered by renewable energy; I see our consumer products all being made with nontoxic materials that can render them either 100% recyclable or 100% biodegradable; I see harmonious communities rooted in love and bonded intricately by interdependence; and

I see humans not as separate entities to nature but one with nature.

What is your vision of a future you can thrive in?
