60+ Conscious Fashion Influencers And Creators Embracing Sustainable Style And Advocating For Systems Change
By Stella Hertantyo
Recently, Canada-based climate and social justice activist, Karishma Porwal, shared an open letter to fast fashion influencers on her Instagram. Part of it reads:
“You may think, ‘If I stop promoting Fashionnova, PrettyLittleThing, or Shein, it won’t make a difference, I’m just one person’. I think that one person can make a difference. Plus, you’re not just one person – you are a person with a loudspeaker. You can speak to thousands of people and many will value your opinion. You can decide to give that loudspeaker to an ethical company, or one that is enslaving women. That is your responsibility.”
Let that sink in for a moment.
We exist in an increasingly digital world where online influencers and creators hold a significant amount of power when it comes to shaping our fashion aspirations when and how we value our clothing. This means that they have a vital role to play in advocating for a more equitable future of fashion.
While fast fashion influencers perpetuate wasteful habits, haul culture, and the mindset of disposability, there is also another movement of influencers on the rise – sustainable fashion influencers.
Being a sustainable fashion influencer comes with a lot of nuances, but these people are on a mission to consciously challenge the fashion status quo by sharing educational information, celebrating ethical brands, shedding light on social and environmental ills, and creating useful tutorials for thrifting, upcycling, mending, and so much more. On top of it all, they are showing us that sustainable fashion can be fun!
If you are starting out your slow fashion journey and looking for a like-minded community, or perhaps you are looking for some style inspiration and a few ways to further your sustainability journey, take a look at this list of sustainable fashion influencers and creators changing the fashion game for good!
